Title

Assessment of emotional and social problem faced by the Children of Alcoholic In selected urban community, West Bengal.

Abstract

A descriptive study conducted to assess emotional and social problem faced by the children of alcoholic in selected urban community, West Bengal with the objectives to determine emotional problems, to identify the social problems faced by the children, to find out the association between emotional problem and social problem with selected socio-demographic variables. The Conceptual frame work was based on Global Monitoring framework, developed by Dr. Robyn Burton, Clive Henn, Don Lavoie, Alanna Wolff, Professor John Marsden, Professor Nick Sheron and staff at Public Health England ( PHE). Snowball sampling technique was used followed by convenient sampling for selecting 140 children of alcoholic. By using demographic data, CAGE questionnaire, Modified Children of Alcoholics Screening Test (CAST-6) and structured interview schedule on emotional problem, social problem. The findings revealed that most (54.08%) of respondent felt loneliness in structured interview schedule related to emotional problem, most (47.45%) of respondent felt insecurity and (47%) of respondent had maladjustmentin structured interview schedule related to social problem. Emotional problem was dependent on their age (2 = 12, df 1, p<0.001), Social problem was dependent on monthly income of the family (2 = 4.60, df 1, p> 0.05). Findings recommended that a quasi-experimental study can be conducted on adverse effects of parental alcoholism on children.

Key Words

Emotional problem In this study emotional problem refers problems such as loneliness, guilt feeling, concentration, hopelessness, fear and anxiety, self-esteemfelt by children of alcoholics which is measured by structured interview schedule. • Social problem In this research social problem refers to problems faced by children of alcoholics in respect to insecurity, maladjustment, avoiding, guilt feeling, criticism, social isolation, lack of confidence, neglect derived from society due to parental alcoholism and would be measured by structured interview schedule. • Children of alcoholics In this study children of alcoholics aged 6-12 years are children who have grown up in families in which either one or both parents are alcoholic, it is measured by Modified Children of Alcoholic screening Test -6 (Modified CAST-6)
